Not sure if many Hyundai owning oppos know this. But recently I was in a hydroplaning accident and the front airbag deployed. I went through the entire insurance process and stuff. Besides a few parts on backorder, every thing went fine. That was until the shop went to send the car to the dealer for the airbag replacement. Hyundai now requires that for every the front air bags deploy, the entire front writing harness needed to be replaced. Yes, EVERYTHING. The dealer didn’t tell the shop this when they got the initial quote. You can imagine that this sounds very expensive, and it is. 2-2.5k for the harness and 2k in labor. If this was discovered before the body shop finished majority of the work, my car would have been totaled. Now I gotta wait a couple more weeks. I bet state farm isn’t very happy with Hyundai at the moment.

This sounds like the initial adjuster’s fault, not Hyundai’s. It doesn’t sound unreasonable considering that the sensors that determine whether or not the airbags should deploy are attached to the harness and move in that impact as the frame gets crushed. Airbag deployment is kind of a big fucking deal.

Damn as long as you’re good that’s all that matters. Was it really bad conditions? Tire wear? Or just like a freak accident?

I’m good. Just was sore. It was a freak accident. Conditions were horrible and came out of no where. Went from light iton to 20ft of visibility. I was traveling slower than other traffic in right lane, crested over a hill off throttle. Next thing I know I was sideways, oppo’d to no avail. Hit guard rail.

I don’t think so either considering the recent airbag debacles. But from what I was told by both the body shop and state farm was that they just found out. I plan on taking to the dealer on the side about it later to get the full 360 so I can live my own judge Judy moment. Personally I just think it’s a case of poor communication.

It was. The worst feeling was I felt the car glide on the water like ice. Saw every second, car did a 360. Didn’t remember the entire thing until a few days later.

My cousin had a similar accident happen to him like 6 years ago, same thing the car spun out and hit a guard rail.

You are correct sir. Lazy estimator. Information is available in all estimating software packages (just have to look, it’s more than replacing the deployed bag on any vehicle), or available online. I checked a 2012 Sonata for kicks and grins, and it’s plainly stated and publicized by the manufacturer what components are required to replace or just check for each type of deployment.
Hopefully they replaced both sides of the front seat belts, or you’re in for another surprise/delay.

Reminds me of the time when I had to get an estimate
before
bringing it to a shop. Needless to say, the initial estimate was just for visible damage but didn’t include the frame damage that had tobe updated once it got to the shop. It’s like, what was the point of the initial estimate?

Thanks for the heads up. I hope I never have to use that information, but it's good to know regardless. I hope you're feeling ok.

The estimator should’ve known that. I’m not involved in the insurance industry, but I know someone well enough that I hear about this stuff a lot.
I also know that Hyundais and Kias less than 5 years old can total from fairly minor damage.

How did the car go sideways without turning or braking? Unless the road was a bit curvier?

Going up hill with a slight right at the top.

I only got what they told me. But I have no idea, so I wouldn’t arm chair qb. But I thought initially how did they not know?

Ahh okay that makes sense. I don’t think I have ever experienced loss of traction in the rain outside of autocross so that certainly sounds scary. Ive certainly slid around more than I wanted to on ice so I imagine that is similar.

As a reluctant Hyundai parts person, I can tell you why. Hyundai does not service pigtails separate and some of those get damaged or need to be replaced after deployment. Which means the whole harness needs to be replaced... WWWWWEEEEEEEEEE

I know you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s the job of whoever is estimating damage to know everything involved in repairing said damage. If they’re caught unaware by an automaker’s policies regarding damage repair, that’s on the estimator.
Side note: I know one particular insurance company’s estimators spend weeks in a building filled with wrecks (this particular location was an old grocery store with stadium seating for lectures), learning how damage occurs and what it takes to repair. When their learning period is up and they have to take their final exam, all the wrecks are wheeled out and new, fresh wrecks are brought in for them to estimate repairs on. Those wrecks then become classroom material for the next class, until it’s time for their final, when yet another new collection of wrecks is brought in. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Damn that sounds rough! I agree it seems to be on the estimator. But that’s a lot great info. Thanks for sharing it! That warehouse thing sounds like it would be interesting to see in person.

No problem. They are a difficult brand to work with.
